Feng Shui Secrets Part 2: The Bedroom & The Home Office

The bedroom needs to be where we rest and recharge and if you’re going to apply feng shui rules to one room in your house, do it here 😊.

Here’s how:

  • Where you place the bed is important. You want your bed in the “commanding position.” The perfect spot is diagonally opposite the door, but never with your feet pointing directly at the doorway.

  • For a sound sleep, make sure your head/headboard is against the wall and that you have a clear view of the door. Leave space on either side of your bed on the wall - centre it along the wall if possible.

  • Clear out the space from under your bed to make sure the qi (energy) can flow easily around you while you sleep.

  • Be symmetrical with your furniture to keep the room balanced; for example place similar side tables and lamps on either side of the bed.

  • Keep exercise equipment, stacks of books, and electronics out of your bedroom, as they have too much ‘active’ energy.

  • Add plants to encourage rejuvenation– just be sure to choose ones that will thrive with the light and space you have.

  • Colour choice matters:

    • Choose earthy and neutral colours to create a relaxing atmosphere

    • Go for greens and blues for more vitality

    • Pick pinks and peaches to emphasize partnership

    • Select red touches to ignite passion.

Whether you have a dedicated home office, or you set up at the dining room table to work from home, use feng shui principles to create an efficient and productive space.

Here’s how:

  • Avoid having your back to the door or your face to a wall – this can hinder creativity. You want to be able to see the door when you’re sitting at your workspace.

  • Keep the space around your desk or workspace free of obstacles, so you can get in and out of it with ease.

  • Use the feng shui bagua to help determine the best layout of your desk to maximize productivity.

  • Activate the “wealth corner” of your office or your desk: If you stand in the doorway facing in, locate the left corner furthest from you (it’s the same location on your desk). To activate it, place an amethyst or crystal here.

Ultimately, applying feng shui principles to your home is about decluttering, finding balance with your furniture, artwork, colours and decor, and maximizing the flow of qi/energy throughout your spaces.

But how do you know when you’ve got the feng shui right?

Here at malt, when we’re done staging a home and doing a final walk-through, one of us we’ll usually say: “This home makes me happy!” and then we know the vibe is warm and welcoming for the potential new owners.
